Job Description



The Stäubli Customs Import and Export Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with all U.S. Customs regulations for international shipments. This role involves coordinating import and export activities, preparing documentation, and working closely with customs brokers, freight forwarders, and internal departments to ensure timely and compliant movement of goods. The position is accountable for meeting the responsibilities and objectives for all North America locations, as are also under the purview of the Director of Operations and Supply Chain.

Responsibilities and Objectives:

  • Compliance and Regulation:
    • Ensure strict adherence to US Customs and Border Protection regulations for import/export activities. This includes managing product classification, origin determination, and valuation processes.
  • Documentation and Classification:
    • Accurately classify products using the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) and maintain meticulous records.
    • Prepare and review key documents, such as commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, and customs declarations.
  • Security Filings and Monitoring:
    • Process Importer Security Filings (ISF) efficiently and monitor entries in the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE).
  • Collaboration with Logistics Partners:
    • Work closely with freight forwarders, customs brokers, carriers, and third-party logistics providers to ensure seamless operations.
  • Shipment Management:
    • Oversee tracking and tracing of shipments, resolve delays promptly, and guarantee timely delivery.
  • Internal Coordination:
    • Collaborate with internal departments, including Purchasing, Sales, and Customer Service, to synchronize logistics with organizational demands.
  • Trade Agreements and Cost Reduction:
    • Keep abreast of trade agreements such as USMCA, tariff classifications, and duty rates.
    • Examine duty exemptions and free trade agreements to uncover cost-saving opportunities.
  • Compliance and Auditing:
    • Ensure adherence to Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) standards and contribute to validation processes.
    • Conduct regular audits of product classifications and import documentation.
  • Data Handling and Reporting:
    • Maintain precise records of shipments, customs filings, and compliance audits.
    • Compile statistical data needed for contract negotiations and internal reporting.
  • Duty Drawback and Reconciliation:
    • Assist with filing and processing claims for duty drawbacks and reconciliation procedures.
  • Process Optimization:
    • Identify process improvement and cost-saving opportunities.
    • Work with internal teams to improve compliance efficiency.
  • Regulatory Awareness and Training:
    • Stay updated on international trade laws and regulations.
    • Provide training and guidance on customs procedures to enhance team capabilities.
  • Strategic Implementation:
    • Develop and execute strategies for duty savings, utilizing methods like first-sale and valuation planning.
  • Regulatory Communication:
    • Monitor changes in regulations and assess their impact, communicating relevant information to stakeholders.
  • Procedure and Process Maintenance:
    • Keep comprehensive documentation of standard operating procedures for customs processes.
  • Interdepartmental Communication:
    • Foster effective communication with division personnel to manage shipments efficiently.
  • Logistics Efficiency:
    • Coordinate closely with affiliates to ensure smooth intercompany and external logistics operations.
  • Reporting and Metrics:
    • Prepare insightful reports and compliance metrics for management evaluation.
  • Continual Improvement:
    • Implement strategies aimed at achieving operational excellence and continuous process improvement.
  • Adheres to all safety, quality and environmental standards

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain, international trade, or related field and/or minimum 2-4 years of experience in U.S. Customs compliance or trade management (emphasis on import operations)
  • Preferred: Licensed U.S. Customs Broker or certifications (CCS, CES)
  • Experience with FTZ operations, drawback programs, and trade audits
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar ERP systems
  • Strong knowledge of HTS classification, customs valuation, and U.S. entry processes
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials handling (IATA/DOT/IMDG) preferred
  • Ability to interpret technical product specifications
  • Excellent computer skills: particularly Microsoft Office suite
  • Effective communications skills and technical presentation abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Physical Requirements:

  • Periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry objects
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times
  • Dexterity and accuracy as needed to operate equipment

Work schedule:

  • Willingness to travel as required both domestically and internationally (up to 10%)
  • This position will report to the Duncan, SC office (this is not a remote or hybrid position)
  • Expectation to follow guidelines set forth in the Employee Handbook

Salary Range:

  • $75,000 - $87,500 USD
