The Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board (Central Coast Water Board) has an opening for an Engineering Geologist in the Site Cleanup Program in its San Luis Obispo office. The individual coming into this position will use geologic and hydrogeologic knowledge and technical expertise to manage cleanup projects and help restore water quality and ensure protection of human health. The position is in the office located at 895 Aerovista Place, Suite 101, San Luis Obispo, California, with a hybrid telework option.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Knowledge and experience with:

  • Geology.
  • Hydrogeology.
  • State and federal water quality laws, regulations, and policies related to waste discharge and cleanup and abatement including the California Water Code.
  • Water quality analytical chemistry and geochemistry.
  • Common groundwater, soil, soil gas, and indoor air investigation and remediation techniques for cleanup of chlorinated solvents, petroleum, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substaces (PFAS), metals, and other pollutants in groundwater, soil, and soil gas.
  • Regional water quality issues, basin plans, water quality goals, and the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board Environmental Screening Levels.
  • Geographic information systems and computer aided drafting.
  • Groundwater fate and transport modeling.
  • Reviewing and writing technical reports.
  • Giving presentations and communicating technical concepts to the public.
  • Strong oral and written communication, critical thinking, and organization skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database management systems.
  • Working as part of a team.

Water Board employees may be eligible for benefits. Health benefits and leave programs are available for most permanent, full-time employees, and some permanent, part-time employees. Statement of Qualifications

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) must be submitted along with the State Application and serves as documentation of candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. It should be typed, no more than three (3) pages in length, using Arial 12 pt. font , and normal margins.

Concisely describe why you are the best candidate to be selected as an Engineering Geologist in the Site Cleanup Program and Underground Storage Tank Program at the Central Coast Water Board.  

The SOQ should include how your knowledge and experience qualify you for this position specifically referencing:

  1. Knowledge of geology and hydrogeology.
  2. Knowledge of fate and transport of contaminants in soil, sediment, groundwater, and soil vapor; and environmental cleanup investigation and remediation.
  3. Knowledge and experience analyzing water quality and monitoring data.
  4. Knowledge of federal and state of California water quality laws, regulations, and policies.
  5. Your experience applying your knowledge related to Item 1 through 4.
  6. Experience reviewing and writing technical reports.
  7. Experience giving presentations and communicating technical concepts to the public.
  8. Experience working on a team.
